Michael
"My doctor said, ‘we didn’t do this in medical school..'’’

Michael doesn’t feel that iron overload has defined his life, but feels the lack of continuity of care means that people must be very proactive about their health. He talks about the need to use ‘Dr Google’ at times, and how his health journey was a learning curve for his doctor, too.

Iron overload is not something that defines me.

I am diagnosed 12 years, mostly, but not entirely due to being proactive about my health.

I used to laugh at people who talked about using ‘Dr Google’ before they went to the doctor, but these days, it's important to do it.

My doctor said, ‘we didn’t do this in medical school.’

Post-Covid, everybody knows primary care medicine is under huge pressure, and it’s been more of a battle to ensure I get venesections. Most of the original GPs have retired, so you don’t have that continuity of care. You’ve got to be very proactive.

Iron overload is not something that defines me. I’ve always been happy to talk about it, to expand the conversation around the issue and how prevalent it is.
